5 Questions to Ask Your Public Library

Understandably not all libraries offer the same services, however I do advise that you check out your local library as there can be many different programs they offer that you may not be aware of.

1. Does your library offer an online eBook rental service? This is an amazing tool to have, it allows you to go onto your library website, browse their database and download eBooks and audio books right onto your tablet or computer. This way you have the ability to rent books without having to leave your house.

2. What is their kid section like? Most of the time when my husband and I go to the library we bring our boys along with us who on most occasions are happy to follow. I imagine that part of the ease of bringing them along is the fact that the library has a highly entertaining kids section filled with toys, computers for kids and different learning devices that can use. This is also a great opportunity for your children to fall in love with books. Let them look at the covers and take things off the shelves and see if it’s something you can add to your story time routine. For me it has also been a good opportunity to teach my boys proper library etiquette. Where do you put books that you have taken off the shelves and no longer wish to read them? What does inside voice mean? How do you handle books with delicate pages?

3. If you live in a larger suburb or city with multiple libraries, does your town allow you to drop off and pick up books from any location regardless of where you originally borrowed your book? This is a great benefit! I live in a really awesome town, with over 330,000 people. Within my town there are several different communities, each with their own library. Depending on what I am doing or where I am when the mood to rent a book strikes, that dictates which library I visit. If I place a book on hold I will order for the pick up to be at the library closest to my house. If for instance I was at the mall and decided to check out a book, I could go to the library nearest there. When I am done with that book I can return it to the library near my home.

4. Can you renew your books online? This has saved the Smiths a lot of money in overdue books fees! If we notice that a book is due, we can renew it online if we know we will not make it to the library that day.

5. Besides checking out items what other services or activities does your library provide? I had been attending this one library for a few weeks before I realized that they offered things like Family Game Night, Creative mind workshops and Skill development classes all for free and all for children. I have yet to attend but I know they are there for our benefit should I decide to use them.

Again, these services may not be available at all libraries however, you will never know unless you ask!
